The Hummingbirds are a 6 piece acoustic outfit from Liverpool, influenced by music from the 50s/60s era. The Hummingbirds capture that “Liverpool” sound as well as putting an interesting twist on conventional folk and blues music, bringing it to a more mainstream audience providing what they describe as modern skiffle.(21st Century Merseybeat)
The band formed in early 2011 with members Jamie Davies (Vocals/Guitar), Matthew Brougham (Guitar), Michael Kountis (Lead Guitar/Vocals) and Richard Smith (Cajon/Vocals) and Ryan Lewis (Bass/Vocals). The band started writing and playing local gigs immediately and after a few months released their 1st EP “Talking Of Tomorrow”. With a sell out show at The Kazimier Liverpool under their belts the band propelled onto bigger things embarking on a small UK tour and grabbing some support slots with artists such as Pete Doherty, Sandi Thom, Status Quo, The Christians, Babyshambles, The Alarm and Liverpool favourites ‘Cast’.
The band were invited in May 2012 to perform in front of HRH The Queen for her Jubilee at the Albert Dock in Liverpool. May was a busy month for the Band, as they played a number of pop up shows across Liverpool Sound City 2012, with street performances in the days, surprise roof top shows and their own headline sold out show in Bumper.
As summer arrived the band were booked to play a few festivals across the UK the highlight being Kendal Calling on the Calling Out Stage. The band packed the tent out and stormed through their set as a group of proud Scousers ready to hit the main stage in 2013.
The band performed at Liverpool’s famous ‘Mathew Street’ festival. They started the day with a performance to 3000 music lovers in Williamson Square, and finished by playing to a sold out crowd in the Zanzibar Club! They also played an intimate pop up show inside Tavern On The Green for a select few twitter followers.
The band have now recorded their final EP entitled “Break Your Heart”. Released on 10th September 2012, exactly a year to the day they released ‘Talking Of Tomorrow’
2012 was truly a prosperous year for the band, However the train in now up and running for 2013, With a number of sold out shows now under the belt and over 20,000 social media followers the lads are making the most of their time travelling around the country introducing more people into their grasp.
Songs of lonesomeness, heart-break, drinking and loss telling it straight from the mountains with little more than a banjo, guitar and a washboard.
This is music from the green hills and valleys of ‘Lawrence country’.
Mean and moody, they can break your heart or skiffle you to submission with their moonshine fuelled drinking songs. It’s a kind of “Up-Noirthicana”…Psycho skiffle through to lo-fi Country/Folk. Light a candle, sip some moonshine and enjoy.
“A raucous debut … Fiddles, banjos, raggedy choruses, accordions … There is a feeling of the Felice brothers here… the future looks bright” Americana-UK
No depression quite liked it too… They said …“Quality Folk enriched Americana from the British heartlands … a remarkable debut” No Depression
Having done laps round Nottingham’s gig circuit in various bands as a session musician, Ben Haynes has appeared almost suddenly as a solo artist. With regular slots at the Acoustic Rooms and his recent NUSIC session there is no denying Ben has made his mark quickly. His track ‘Do You Think I’m Able?’ is tangible proof that he’s a musician not letting anything get in his way of his ambition to perform and write his own music.
Playing metal/rock/industrial in the main room, death/doom/black/goth/grind/melodeath in room 2 AND classic rock/prog/hard rock in room 3!
Cheap drinks, good music and open until 3am. What more could you ask for?
